About The 2023 CCMUK Conference
The Chinese Medicine & Human Health conference was the first annual CCMUK event which took place over 2 days, between Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th October 2023 at 1 Wimpole Street, London UK.
Co-hosted between the UK Centre of Chinese Medicine and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM), this conference explored current and exciting key themes of the relationship between Chinese medicine and human health.
This was presented through a mixture of speeches and practical masterclasses taught by hand-picked industry experts, which allowed attendees to put their learnings straight into practice.
Attendees included expert speakers from across the UK and Europe, plus representatives of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM). These speakers attended to share their knowledge and expertise across a wide range of Chinese Medicine topics.
Delegates engaged with the cutting-edge of modern Chinese medicine through keynote presentations and interactive masterclasses, led by experts at the forefront of the industry.

Charles Buck is a published author, educator, celebrated Chinese medicine practitioner, and valued member of both the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).
In 1994, he became course leader for the UK’s first Chinese medicine college programme, helping to establish a rich tradition that continues to grow and evolve to this day.
Charles aims to bring his unique perspective to a keynote speech that tackles the thorny problem of how best to elucidate the many benefits TCM and its practitioners can bring to more conventional forms of healthcare. Drawing on his considerable experience as a clinician and member of multiple regulatory bodies, he will seek to interrogate the current status of TCM in the western world, discussing what we can do to accelerate its advancement even further.

Professor Yue-Lai Chen’s integral roles at Longhua Hospital (an affiliate of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) are a reflection of his pioneering work as a TCM practitioner and researcher.
Professor Chen’s success was built on a rigorous approach to his academic duties; building on hours of clinical research, he established diagnostic criteria and treatment methods (centred around acupuncture and moxibustion) for urinary system diseases that are instrumental to this day.
Over the following 20 years, Professor Chen shared and iterated on his methodology across 15 China provinces, training more than 1500 grassroots doctors in the process.
In his workshop Technical Scheme of Acupuncture and Moxibustion for Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence & Allergic Rhinitis, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from one of the most distinguished minds currently practicing in this sub-division of Chinese medicine.

Professor Zan-Yu Chen is an esteemed Chinese medicine practitioner and academic, with over two decades of clinical experience and a number of top positions at prestigious institutions.
As Chief Editor of the Journal of Chinese Medicine in the UK and President of the Federation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (FTCMP) he plays a key role in the promotion and regulation of the industry.
He is steadfast in his belief that Chinese medicine is the solution to many of the world’s issues, not just healthcare. He feels very strongly that the separation of techniques and methodologies from their roots of classical Chinese medicine roots is something that must be fought against.
Professor Chen will explore these timely subjects and more in his talk, Understanding Classic Chinese Medicine.

Drawing on her background in evidence-based integrative medicine, Dr. Xiao-Yang Hu has coordinated multiple research activities over the past 10 years, with many of her 40 publications centering around the integration of Chinese medicine in primary care settings.
She has received a number of national and international grants over the past decade, including the NIHR School for Primary Care Research Launching Fellowship in 2016, which provided funding and facilitated the exchange of ideas between her and colleagues in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM).
She is keen on securing additional funding from commercial and governmental sectors, which will allow her to (among other pursuits) continue to explore the integration of Chinese medicine in conventional healthcare settings.
Dr. Hu will be conducting a joint speech with Dr. Merlin Willcox to discuss a project they both worked on: CHAT-COPD Overview of a Chinese Medicine Research Project, Jointly Funded by China and the UK government. The study investigated the use of certain Chinese herbs to treat COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder), a condition that affects millions of people in the UK every year.

As President and Doctoral Supervisor of SHUTCM and Chief Physician at its affiliate Longhua Hospital, Professor Ji has published over 300 papers, which in turn have been cited over 4,000 times, making them one of the most highly-cited researchers in China.
Professor Ji has chaired several important National Science and Technology projects, authored five professional guidelines, and coordinated the R&D of multiple novel drug approvals.
His considerable clinical experience and robust international network of contacts ensure he is well-placed to explore the potential for disease syndrome combination therapy to bridge the gap between Chinese medicine and western medicine.

A renowned practitioner and pioneer of a novel, patented intradermal needle, Amanda Shayle is an incredibly important voice in the field of acupuncture. Through a number of research projects, Amanda has worked tirelessly to accelerate the integration of complementary Chinese medicine into NHS treatment options. She holds positions at multiple Chinese medicine institutions and relevant regulatory bodies.
Amanda runs her own successful clinic, and it was there that she established a new kind of acupuncture treatment which combines her original needle design and LED light therapy integration.

A pioneer in the field of moxibustion and acupuncture, Professor Xue-Yong Shen is a Tenured Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at SHUTCM. He is also the director of multiple acupuncture-focused organisations, using his considerable experience to help guide the discipline to a higher standard.
Professor Shen was the first to establish the action mechanism of moxibustion, giving us a deeper understanding of an incredibly powerful tool. He also developed the first laser moxibustion device. For those interested in this Chinese medicine treatment, Professor Shen’s keynote speech on the Clinical Use and Action Mechanism behind moxibustion is absolutely unmissable.

Professor Yu Song is the Managing Director of TCM at Longhua Hospital, an affiliate of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM). The recipient of Shanghai’s ‘A Leading Talent of Chinese Medicine’ award, his novel work on skin conditions, and the treatment options that TCM can provide to ameliorate them, have established him as an influential force in the industry.
Professor Song specialises in treating a variety of skin diseases: eczema, urticaria, photosensitive dermatitis, psoriasis and more. His workshop will offer a chance to view and practise his clinical approach to diagnosing specific causes of eczema and formulating a treatment plan; it’s an exciting opportunity to glean knowledge from one of the most renowned experts on skin disease.

Dr. Merlin Willcox is a clinical lecturer and researcher at the University of Southampton. His research interests include primary health care for disadvantaged populations, traditional medicine, and clinical trials of herbal medicine.
He qualified in medicine from the University of Oxford in 1998 and completed training as a General Practitioner in 2004. Since then he has combined clinical work as a GP with research.
He has been involved in several clinical trials of herbal medicines for malaria and helped to set up a network of people involved in this field called “RITAM” (Research Initiative on Traditional Antimalarial Methods).
In his speech CHAT- COPD Overview of a Chinese Medicine Research Project, Jointly Funded by China and the UK government, Dr. Merlin Willcox and Dr. Xiao-Yang Hu will be discussing the seminal UK-China collaborative project that they helped coordinate.

Professor Shi-Fen Xu is the Senior Doctor and Director of the Department of Acupuncture at Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A renowned acupuncturist, she is the recipient of multiple awards and honours for feats within the industry and academic world of Chinese medicine.
She specialises in the application of acupuncture to treat a variety of discrete disorders: nervous system diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, metabolic diseases, and digestive system diseases.
The rise in mental health issues over the past few decades has seen an increasing desire for TCM treatments as an alternative to to conventional healthcare options.
Professor Xu addresses this paradigm shift in her speech topic, the Clinical Application of Acupuncture on Depression/Insomnia, offering wisdom on how to effectively use acupuncture to ameliorate two of the most prevalent mental issues clients face today.

Professor Qin-Hua Zhang is an esteemed professor who holds multiple high-level positions at Shuguang Hospital, as well as vice-president and vice-chairman roles for multiple gynaecology and fertility committees. With significant experience in both the clinical and regulatory sectors of women’s healthcare, Professor Zhang’s broad skillset makes her one of the leading figures in the field.
Professor Zhang specialises in infertility treatment with a combination of Chinese medicine and IVF; this interdisciplinary versatility is present across most of her areas of expertise, from premature ovarian failure to menopausal syndrome.
In her workshop, Application of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Assisted Reproductive Technology, Professor Zhang will conduct practical demonstrations of her extremely successful clinical approach.
